Our mission at Purple Sage Farms is to introduce people to healthy, fresh and flavorful food.

Over the last 25 years Purple Sage Farms has grown a wide range of organic herbs, greens and specialty vegetables. Today, we grow over 80 different herbs. From the king of herbs basil to shiso, an Asian sushi herb, to standard culinaries of rosemary, sage, thyme and cilantro, we grow plants that add character and heart to dishes. Our greens and salad mixes change with the seasons and include any variety of colors and textures -red, yellow and green leaf lettuces, lacy and spicy mustards like mizuna, ruby streaks and the milder tatsoi or arugula, and even more unique components like pea shoots, salad burnet, lemony sorrel and calendula petals. We grow unusual vegetables like purple broccoli and habaneros with high brix, foods high in nutritional value.

Tim Sommer started the farm in 1988, before Idaho had an organic certification program--which he was instrumental in creating in 1990. He also pioneered direct selling to local restaurants. The farm supplies many chefs with unique, fresh ingredients to liven their menus.

Now run by father and son team, Tim and Mike Sommer, the farm has twelve greenhouses totaling 36,000 square feet of herbs and vegetables, and 47 acres of pasture for livestock. These fourth-generation Idaho farmers are involved in the community and actively support the local food community, serving board memberships for Idaho’s Bounty, Boise Farmers Market and the Idaho Center for Sustainable Agriculture.
